Inducing lactation consists of initiating and developing milk production without a recent pregnancy. More and more parents are considering inducing lactation for a baby they didn’t birth in circumstances including adoption, surrogacy, shared partner feeding, and beyond. These parents are more likely to have anatomical, hormonal, or physiological needs requiring an individualized approach to care. Lactation professionals can work with parents to develop a comprehensive, personalized plan for inducing lactation that allows them to make informed choices in line with their lactation goals and overall physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
